To celebrate the release of Doom to rent online at Blockbuster.co.uk, we caught up with our favourite action hero - Dwayne Johnson AKA - The Rock to talk about Doom the game - what he thought about being referred to as the "new Arnie" and also how the hell, he can keep so annoyingly fit. Here's what he said. Exclusive to Blockbuster.co.uk.
How do you feel playing a good guy turned bad?
I had a lot of fun during it. That's why I took the role. I thought if I was going to be the antihero trying to end the world there's no better movie to do it than Doom. It's rated R, it's no bulls**t, excuse my language, it's straight ahead.
Were you familiar with the game and did you play it before?
Yeah. I was a big fan of the game, I played it when it first came out. I was a big fan for a lot of reasons. Number one: I like all the gamers who were pressed back then with the pioneering attitude, that id Software, those guys. He had the guts to do something different, be very violent and to a cool POV of the first person shooter, back in the day that was really, really cool.
You have a lot of stuff coming out, like seven movies. Is it just because you want to get out of the house? What's going on?
(laughs) No. That list is probably trimmed down a little bit. I have three movies in the can now and I'm trying to decide what I'll do next. There's a great Disney project that I may do. And there's a great comedy with myself and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ryan Reynolds and Frank Oz directing that I'm very excited about. It's called Horrible Bosses. It's for anyone who has hated their bosses. It's really good and funny. I don't know, it all depends. I will tell you this: I worked for a year straight since I first started filming Doom and I'm really tired. I just want a break, go home, go fishing and just relax with the family.
Are most of your coming movies action oriented?
No, like Red Iron Gang is a sports drama where I play a probation officer. It's a true story, it happened in Malibu. The prison is still there where we filmed, it's a prison for kids, and they lost hope and one guy has hope for them. It happened about 12 years ago, it's incredible. Every once in a while a special movie comes along, we go all out, it moves you. Southland Tales is another drama, or drama/dark comedy where I play a paranoid-schizophrenic who hears voices and sees the Apocalypse of the world happening and it does happen. Sarah Michelle Gellar plays my girlfriend, and Mandy Moore plays my wife, so there's a lot going on with that. So there's no action.
What about movies that your daughter can watch on DVD, are you interested doing something for her?
Yeah, that's great. The one with Disney is fantastic. It's called Daddy's Girl, and it's about a little girl, it's great. I look forward to when she can see daddy's work, that'll be great.
Do you feel that you still have something to prove or have you done that already?
No, I don't think that I have anything to prove now. I think that my performances in the past, whether it's Be Cool or something else.I feel good now. I wanted to get over that hump of "oh, he's just the action guy". I know it takes just time. I think with time, patience and performance I can get there. Now I just want to continue to be challenged and do a wide range of work and have fun in the process. We're still making movies, it's still great, without saving the world. It's a very good job we have.
Would you even do romantic comedies?
Yeah, I'd love to. Sure. We've got a couple but the scripts just stunk, so...I'm just waiting for the right one. Halle is ready, I believe she's ready (laughs).
Do you believe that your fans allow you to be yourself and not portray this ass-kicking machine your whole life and do a transition like Arnold did?
Oh, yeah. I'm very up front and honest in my approach to doing movies which has always been; I make you laugh, that's great, or I kick ass or whatever, but I just want to entertain too as well. To make sure that you're thoroughly entertained when you leave the theatre, whether it comes to playing a game or being an antihero. I just want to make sure that your money is well spent. And I'm not only amazed but really grateful.
What do you think about the title 'the new Arnold' that you've been given?
That's great, cool. He's been ultra successful and now he's a governor.
President next?
President next. (laughs) It's very flattering. He's made some really good movies like Predator, I've always been a fan of it, Terminator 2 as well.
Do you also want to be a governor in the future?
Not right now.
But do politics interest you?
Sure, I think they interest all of us to some extent. But I'm happy making movies, I don't want to leave this now, don't want to mess with the fire of politics. Maybe one day, you never know.
Are you a strict father or can your daughter never do anything wrong in your mind?
I'm a softie, yeah. I try to be strict, I really do, I try. My wife is phenomenal. She's a great mom like most moms are, they have that bond with their babies and their kids. I try to be, but I'm away and then every time it is like "whatever you want". She knows...she's smart.
How old is she?
Four. So she's at that age.
Where she starts manipulating?
Oh, yeah. You'll see.
Do you wrestle with her?
No, I don't. Just kick the ball around and stuff like that.
What is the key to a successful relationship?
It's the ability to say 'yes, honey' (laughs), 'yes, you are right'. I think, and I'm no Dr. Phil, but what's helped me is to be.I always make a point and especially in the business where I am, to always see each other and make that effort, make that commitment and not go over a certain amount of time before we see each other and not forgetting the small things like, I'm a stickler for detail. I'm not very anal, like this has to be set like that, but like I notice little things, and I think that's important.
I heard that you don't like to do love scenes in movies, is that true?
No, I don't have a problem with it. In Southland Tales I have a wife and a girlfriend, and we have a couple of love scenes with Mandy Moore and Sarah Michelle.
But your wife probably wouldn't want you to work with Angelina Jolie?
I know...that's right!
What kind of workout routine do you have nowadays and is it hard to stay in great shape?
For me working out is just like an escape, it's my sanctuary, I love to get out and just work out. Because there are always so many people around me, I like just to get away. It's easy, fine. It's interesting because every time I go to work out, I don't work out in a private gym. I like to go out to my public gyms like 24h Fitness or Gold's Gym, I don't mind that because it has energy that I like. Private gyms.nobody's in there, just you and the trainer. Typically for actors their private trainer becomes their psychologist where they just want to talk.
When you are at a public gym aren't you hassled all the time?
I was just going to say, what my point was earlier, I always wish I had a voyeur camera right here (point at his chest) to capture the insanity. It's so funny, every day it's the same thing. Somebody always comes up, and I'm always gracious, I don't mind ever meeting people but it's like, and I have my headphones on, clearly, but it's like "I got this script, this idea, I'm so sorry to bother you, the script is in the car, I got an idea for you, I know someone who knows someone, this producer has a project and you'd be great for it, there's a CD in my car, I've got a song I want you to listen to.". It's insane. I have a story every day. It's funny to me. I understand though, I've been there. So I tell them to call my agent, here's his number. But it's one in a billion chances that.
Does your agent actually take the call?
Always, because eventually you run into these people, and he always takes the call. That's how we are anyways, my team. We listen, even if it's not right, it's not going to happen or we're not interested at this point. Always be gracious, don't ever be rude to anybody.
Are you doing the John Woo movie, Spy Hunter? He said that you had a dinner with him.
Yes, we did. Right now I'm not sure if John is going to do Spy Hunter because he's on another project. I hope he does, I'd still like to work with him. John was great. I've been a big fan of John's and his work. He's fantastic but very quiet when he sat down with me. The first meeting we had about Spy Hunter was to get him excited about it and to hope that he would direct it. So this was the meeting: if he liked me he was going to do it, that's what I heard. We have our lunch, he's very quiet, his partner Terence Chang was doing all the talking. I'm kind of looking at John, trying to make small talk, saying how I see Spy Hunter, and he's like "yeah, uh-uh" (quietly, with no enthusiasm). I thought this is no good, this sucks, it's not going to happen. Finally I said that "Johnny, I got to tell you that what I want to do one day, is what you had a couple of actors do in your movies. Like in slow motion, jump up, double guns, bum-bum, with doves flying and.". I didn't care at this point. John was like "yeah!" (with face lighting up) and he whispered something to Terence. So I got his attention and 30 minutes later we got a call from Universal like "he loves you!" (laughs).
Finally, with 'Doom' now available to rent on DVD at Blockbuster.co.uk, what features do you personally like to watch on DVD?
I love to see the behind the scenes features, especially if it's a movie that's interesting. I love the movie making process anyway, you know. This is a great business we're in. What I don't like, a lot of the time, is the commentary that the actors and the directors have, which is why you see the commentary of myself on the DVD and Andrzej Bartkowiak, the director.I always make the point when I do commentaries, to make them very entertaining. When you watch it with my commentary it turns it into another movie because I'm making fun of people, I'm talking a lot of shit about myself, about everybody else, so that's what you'll see with Doom. A lot of times the commentaries on DVDs can be so stuffy and so 'actory' (with pretentious voice) "My motivation for this scene was." You're taking a piss! What are you talking about? You're peeing. "My motivation to pee was that my bladder was being." Shut up! (laughs) You know what I mean. I don't want to hear that. Give me something else, like what happened this day on the set, what's going on with the caterer, what did you have for lunch that day, anything.
Thank you
