The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has spoken but it wasn't exactly what we predicted. There were quite a few surprises in what has been a remarkable year for British film. Highlights of the evening included the Best Actor gong going to Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood, winning over the likes of George Clooney and Viggo Mortensoen; while Matt Greenhalgh won the special achievement award for writing the awesome British film 'Control'. Elsewhere, Transformers star Shia Labeouf won the Orange Rising Star award - the only award to be voted for by the public while Marion Cotillard was the surprise winner in the Best Actress category for her performance in La Vie En Rose.

For more than 40 years, Luciano Pavarotti cut a most distinctive figure in the operatic world. Later he and the other tenors went on to perform to over 2 billion people from a concert in Paris at the World Cup in 1998. We were all saddened to hear of Peter Boyle's death. The man, known to millions as Frank Barone on the popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond passed away on December 12th 2006. He was an actor with morals - campaigning with Jane Fonda against the Vietnam War and turning down the lead role in The French Connection as he believed it glamorized violence. Entertaining people was at the core of what the man was about, and for this, he will be missed.

Robert Altman, the Hollywood director responsible for cinematic classics such as MASH, Nashville and The Player has died. A great director, famous for concentrating on the human experience by using overlapping (more natural) dialogue and free floating humour in his movies.
