The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has spoken but it wasn't exactly what we predicted. There were quite a few surprises in what has been a remarkable year for British film. Highlights of the evening included the Best Actor gong going to Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood, winning over the likes of George Clooney and Viggo Mortensoen; while Matt Greenhalgh won the special achievement award for writing the awesome British film 'Control'. Elsewhere, Transformers star Shia Labeouf won the Orange Rising Star award - the only award to be voted for by the public while Marion Cotillard was the surprise winner in the Best Actress category for her performance in La Vie En Rose. Curl up on the sofa with your significant other, or else a giant tub of ice cream, and open your heart to such classic odes to love as Annie Hall, Notting Hill, Shakespeare in Love and An Officer and a Gentleman. For more than 40 years, Luciano Pavarotti cut a most distinctive figure in the operatic world. His rare combination of power and quality marked him out from his peers and he became an instant hit in opera circles when he debuted on stage in the sixties. With both a huge voice and personality, Pavarotti was the first opera star of his age that managed to break through to become a global phenomenon when, in 1990, he and his fellow tenors Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo performed at the World Cup closing ceremony in Rome. His rendition of the signature tune - Nessun Dorma became the iconic song of the tournament. Later he and the other tenors went on to perform to over 2 billion people from a concert in Paris at the World Cup in 1998. A larger than life hero for many, Pavarotti will be remembered as the man who introduced millions to the wonders of opera and he will be sorely missed. We were all saddened to hear of Peter Boyle's death. The man, known to millions as Frank Barone on the popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond passed away on December 12th 2006. A talented character actor, Boyle starred in some of the great Hollywood pictures of the last the last forty years including Taxi Driver, The Candidate and Malcolm X. He was an actor with morals - campaigning with Jane Fonda against the Vietnam War and turning down the lead role in The French Connection as he believed it glamorized violence. Vive La France! Whatever your view of the French, there's no denying that they really do know how to make terrific movies. Unlike Hollywood films, French Cinema tends to rely on powerful stories and strong character performances to move the story forward; they don't add in special effects for the sake of using special effects and that often produces a superior, more satisfying story. To mark the release of the incredible action thriller District 13 to rent at Blockbuster.co.uk, we've gathered together the finest French films that we can think of... if we've missed any out - drop us a line. These titles take you through almost every conceivable form of this transition, with some leaving you in tears of joy and other leaving you questioning the world we live in. Whether it's a trip down memory lane or simply a great night in that you're looking for this collection has it all. War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing… except for some of the best movies ever made, that is. Epic accounts of every major conflict in human history, from Saving Private Ryan and Platoon to Apocalypse Now and The Dirty Dozen. "I know stealing a foot is weird. But, hello, living in a house where a foot is available to be stolen is weird." From Alan Ball, the award-winning writer of American Beauty, comes a TV experience unlike any other. A compelling and frequently surprising portrait of a dysfunctional Pasadena family who run an independent funeral home, Six Feet Under is a stunning drama with a dark vein of humour running throughout. We love it to death. Before CSI: Miami and CSI: NY came the show that kicked this awesome franchise off, the original, and best, Vegas-set CSI. Fiercely innovative and edgy, this top-rated, award-winning crime drama stars Manhunter's William Petersen and Species' Marg Helgenberger. Less of a 'whodunnit' than a 'howdunnit', CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) focuses on the cutting edge forensic tools and practices used to solve a case. With a spectacular sixth season about to kick off in the States, here's your chance to go back to the beginning and enjoy the fabulous first. David Caruso dominates the screen as intense criminologist Horatio Caine, edgy and dangerous with a 'blind allegiance to justice' that keeps this top-rated CSI spin-off both fresh and surprising. Florida has a seamy underside and it's up to Caruso and his team to probe it mercilessly, searching for clues while soaking up the sun. As with the original CSI, the show focuses less on the criminals than the crime itself, not so much a 'whodunit' as a 'howdunit'. Brilliant. Californian melodrama with a knowing script and a cast as sharp as razors. Catch up with Ryan, Seth, Kirsten and the rest of the beautiful people as they go about their business in gorgeous Orange County, a wealthy, harbour-front community where passions run high. Imagine the toughest day you ever had, add an assortment of terrorists, assassins, kidnappers and double agents, gun fights, car chases and the odd spot of torture, and that’s what it’s like to spend 24 hours in the shoes of indomitable government agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). Exciting, inventive, gripping stuff. Even in Hollywood, truth can be stranger than fiction. You couldn't make up a story more inspiring than Erin Brockovich, more heart breaking than Schindler's List, more peculiar than Ed Wood or more outrageous than Stander. There's nothing quite like real life on the screen, intimate tales from Silkwood to Shine and sumptuous biopics like Gandhi and The Aviator. From Hotel Rwanda and The Insider to Goodfellas and Amadeus, have we got a true story for you! When most people think about cartoons they usually remember Saturday mornings spent as a child in front of the television, spooning bowl after bowl of over-sweetened cereal into their mouths and watching crudely animated and simply written shows starring talking animals and hulking super heroes with poor vocabulary. Such is not the case with our friends over in Japan. On the other side of the Pacific Ocean, they regularly produce animated shows – known more commonly as “anime” – aimed for all ages. Anime titles cover a hugely wide range of genres, whether it be romantic comedies, intense action adventures, erotically-charged dramas, and anything and everything else in between. Check out this collection and add some awesome anime to your list today! In conjunction with Christian Bale's remarkable new thriller, The Machinist, we've come up with a cracking compilation of movies that insist we mix a little thinking in with our viewing. Tangled tales of political intrigue, sci fi super-concepts to boggle the mind, twisted crime stories, warped, crazy comedies and even the occasional heartbreaking drama. From Chinatown and The Manchurian Candidate to The Matrix, Memento and Being John Malkovich, welcome to our feast of food for thought... Space, the final frontier... These are the voyages of the original Starship Enterprise, a century before Kirk's shenanigans, boldly getting themselves into all sorts of galactic trouble. It's a brand new day for humanity. War, poverty and disease are things of the past. The Federation doesn't exist yet, everyone's excited about warp drives and transporters, and the Vulcans are as high and mighty as ever. Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) is the main man, captain of a brave crew of assorted scientists and adventurers, all of whom insist they're on a mission of exploration, even though it's obvious that they're really there to fight the Klingons and anyone else who gives them a hard time. The Star Trek saga has a new beginning. See how it all began. Remember that moment in Independence Day when the aliens finally attack and the streets fill with fire, people are dropping like flies but a dog survives so everybody cheers? Surely no further proof is needed that we, as an nation of pet lovers, prefer animals to humans. And who can resist our furry, feathery or fishy friends when they do their bit for wholesome family entertainment? Add some critters to your list today, from Lassie to Nemo. The Cinema, home of big screen blockbusters, outrageous superhero adventures, splashy romantic comedies and complex, stressful thrillers, all designed to drag us out of the sunshine and fresh air and into the shaded embrace of our local cinemas. A wise man once said that families are like fudge... mostly sweet, with a few nuts. Join us, then, as we celebrate the cinematic family unit in all of its glorious diversity, from loving and supportive to neglectful and dangerous. "When our relatives are at home," wrote George Bernard Shaw, "we have to think of all their good points or it would be impossible to endure them." Sounds like he just saw Meet The Fockers. Movie stars don’t die, they just retreat to their Hollywood mansions to plot their comebacks. And we’ve seen an awful lot of those over the years. John Travolta in Pulp Fiction. Barbra Streisand in Meet The Fockers. David Carradine in Kill Bill. Even Demi Moore in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. And now it’s Michael Keaton’s turn, scaring us senseless in supernatural thriller White Noise. Why not add some classic comeback movies to your list today? From the moment Max Shreck bit his very first neck in Murnau's silent classic Nosferatu, movie audiences have thrilled to vampire tales, the scarier, sexier and bloodier the better. From Bela Lugosi's debonair Dracula to Wesley Snipes' fanged avenger Blade, there's a long and rich history of big screen blood sucking, appreciated and enjoyed by generations of horror fans worldwide. Stakes at the ready, then, as we present a selection of the greatest vampire flicks of all time. Return with us now to the days of polite society, back when upper lips were stiff, corsetry was tortuous and no one was really happy. Hardly the good old days, but at least everyone looked smart and knew how to behave. From Austen to Dickens we have no end of impeccable period dramas for you to enjoy, films that, for better and for worse, reveal how we used to live. There’s nothing better than being scared half to death in the comfort of your own living room. To confront your worst nightmares without any real risk. Whatever you’re afraid of, be it zombies, werewolves, vampires, demons, ghosts or serial killers, we have the movies to terrify you. Classics by legendary fright flick directors John Carpenter, George Romero, Wes Craven and Dario Argento. And that’s just for starters. We dare you to add some to your list... As much as we enjoy the Academy Awards, there's no denying they've made an awful lot of mistakes over the years, frequent errors in judgement which resulted in films now regarded as all-time classics failing to win any of the major Oscars. Stuff like Vera Drake and The Color Purple. Directors and stars are also frequently overlooked, from Hitchcock and Scorsese to Richard Burton and Glenn Close. That doesn't mean we can't still enjoy their movies, though. We've collected some of the earliest works of many of Hollywood's shiniest stars. Some of the films are surprisingly good. Others are hilariously bad. Either way, there's a lot of entertainment to be found in these formative features. See Jim Carrey nude in All In Good Taste! Brad Pitt dazzles in teen sports drama Across the Tracks (1991). And few first films come better - or worse - than Arnold Schwarzenegger's riotous Hercules in New York (1970). Enjoy! There’s never any harm in having another crack at something, updating or "re-imagining" an old classic for a new audience. Sometimes remakes even manage to improve on the original. Though great in their time, The Fly, The Nutty Professor, House on Haunted Hill and Ocean’s Eleven were all overshadowed by superior remakes. It works for TV too: the new Battlestar Galactica series is light years ahead of the old. For starters, we recommend The Manchurian Candidate. There’s nothing better than a great cartoon to whisk you off to another time and place. Restricted only by the imaginations of their creators, animated features construct worlds where anything is possible, and you’re never too old to enjoy them. From the hand-painted beauty of Disney’s Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs to the pixel perfect wonder of The Incredibles, there are seventy year’s worth of animated treasures just waiting to be discovered. Sisters are doing it for themselves, be they super-powered, emotionally strong or merely just media savvy. From the full-figured fun of Bridget Jones and the sweeping adventure of Lara Croft to the cracked sophistication of Katharine Hepburn and the scream queens of modern horror, we have wonderful, memorable, empowering films to suit every taste. Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger, Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Bette Davis, Shirley Maclaine and Jamie Lee Curtis: we salute you all! With great power comes great responsibility… to amaze and entertain audiences who have waited decades to see the exploits of the caped and powerful realistically portrayed on the screen. Thanks to the wonder of computers and the images they generate, we’re finally able to see Spider-Man swinging through the streets of New York, The Hulk smashing everything in his path and a scantily clad Halle Berry skip along the rooftops in true Catwoman style. They have the skills, they wear the tights, and they bash the bad guys so that we don’t have to. Up, up and away! Return with us now to the days of thrilling adventure, a boys’ own universe larger than life where men were super, women were damsels and scientists were mad, bad and most probably in league with the Nazis. Inspired by pulp magazine fiction and the cliffhanger movie serials of the Thirties and Forties, the likes of Sky Captain, Flash Gordon and Indiana Jones are here to keep the spirit of old-school derring-do alive. We salute them. The simple pleasures of classic kid’s TV are yours for the taking, ideal entertainment for the young and the young-at-heart. If it’s superhero thrills you’re after, we’ve got everything from He Man and Iron Man to Danger Mouse and Super Ted. Come and get ‘em. Money can’t buy you love, it’s true, but it can rent you a fair few movies on the subject. An infinite variety, actually, some funny, some tragic, all of them doing whatever they can to tug at your heartstrings and leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. All you need to add is a comfy sofa, a decent bottle of wine, and the right person to share it with. Within the first ten minutes of most movies you can usually tell what’s going to happen right through to the end. Been there, seen that, bought the t-shirt… But every so often a film comes along that defies expectations, and really, there’s nothing we like better than being surprised. We here at Blockbuster love twist-in-the-tale flicks, can’t get enough of those jaw-dropping moments when our assumptions are suddenly and unexpectedly turned on their head. From Hitchcock’s Vertigo and Neil Jordan’s The Crying Game through to everything ever made by director M. Night Shyamalan, we’ve assembled a sterling collection of films that you can’t second guess. Set faces for stun... They fly. They swing. They swim. They wear the tights. They have the powers. They save the world, because that’s their job.
