It’s Harry’s third year at Hogwarts but as he returns to the school, he discovers that something sinister is afoot – convicted murderer Sirius Black has escaped the Azkaban prison and Harry is his next target!

The third installment in the hugely successful Harry Potter series follows the boy-wizard Harry potter (Daniel Radcliffe) during his third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. After running away from the home of his non-magical relatives, Harry travels back to school via the magical “Knight Bus” and the Hogwarts Express. Along the way, Harry discovers that the dangerous murderer Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped from Azkaban prison and may be out to kill him.

The soul-sucking Azkaban prison guards known as Dementors are dispatched to Hogwarts to recapture Black but seem to be after Harry as well. Harry is advised by Professor Dumbledore (now played by Michael Gambon), to stay as far away from the Dementors as possible. In addition to avoiding Sirius Black and the Dementors, Harry and his friends spend their third year at Hogwarts learning how to ride a half-horse, half-eagle Hippogriff, repel shape shifting Boggarts and master the art of Divination. They also visit the wizarding village of Hogsmeade and the Shrieking Shack, which is considered the most haunted building in Britain.

With a darker theme and more mature characters, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is exciting and fun to watch. The main characters look and act much older than in the first Harry Potter movie (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone), but still stay in keeping with the characters in the J.K.Rowling novel.

A more mature and confident Daniel Radcliffe delivers a show-stopping performance as the increasingly vulnerable and conflicted Harry Potter. As his character grows older, he appears to be more aware of his own sense of loneliness, which adds a real sense of sadness to the character – something that is sure to be developed in future films. Rupert Grint and Emma Watson also return as Harry Potter’s friends Ron and Hermione who now express a hint of sexual tension that will no doubt be explored in future movies.

The new actors are good too, especially David Thewlis as the latest “Defense Against the Dark Arts” teacher, Professor Lupin who has some terrific scenes with both Harry Potter and fellow teacher Professor Snape (Alan Rickman). Gary Oldman pulls out all the stops in his performance as Sirius Black, the tormented and furious wizard that can turn himself into a Wolf. While Michael Gambon takes on the hard task of filling the late Richard Harris’ shoes, and provides a more than adequate performance as Dumbledore.

As you would expect in a Harry Potter movie, the special effects are amazing! The hooded Dementors are sufficiently chilling, lending much from the Nazgul, the wraith from The Lord of the Rings trilogy while the flying scenes during the Quiddich match and those featuring the computer generated Hippogriff are completely flawless.

With great acting, special effects and a John Williams soundtrack, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is a worthy addition to the world of Harry Potter and the perfect movie for a great night in. Highly recommended to rent.
