It is the year 2050 and impending ecological disaster on Earth renders the colonisation of other planets essential. Commander Kate Bowman (Carrie-Ann Moss) heads a team of astronauts on an exploratory mission to Mars, but the damage resulting from a solar flare causes the expedition's ship to crash land and its robot to malfunction. Trapped on Mars without communication equipment and hunted by the rampant robot, the team at first appear doomed but soon make a number of startling discoveries about the planet and its inhabitants.
