Award-winning drama starring Judi Dench in one of her first movie roles. A man (Brian Phelan) picks up his girlfriend (Ann Lynn) after she finishes her shift as a nightclub dancer. They go for a moonlight stroll along the river but soon begin playing petty games with each other's emotions. Meanwhile, a new mother (Dench) is left at home with the baby after her uncaring husband (Norman Rodway) heads out for a night on the town with his best friend (Joe Melia). A tragic accident soon brings the couples together.

It is a moment before dawn and the river traffic on the Thames begins to easy its way through the fog. The River Police find the body of a young girl left to dry by the ebb tide. Her body is brought ashore and her possessions examined. Who is she?And what drove her to take her own life?

For the young married couple (Judie Danch and Norman Roadway) love brought them together, but now marriage and a child have driven them appart. The young husband would rather stay out than return home to a kept awake by a teething baby daughter. Their story id whitnessed by their friend (Joe Melia), a batchelor, who is exposed as the loneliness of them all.

At the same time two young lovers meet outside a nightclub. Desperate to maek contact, but afraid of what their involvement could mean, the girl (Ann Lynn) shies from physical contact and the boy (Brian Phelan) connot cope with his feelings of being trapped by the love she offers.
