Classic French underworld drama set in Paris at the turn of the century. When Georges Manda (Serge Reggiani) falls for Marie (Simone Signoret), he faces the wrath of her boyfriend, the petty crook Roland (William Sabatier). Gang boss Felix (Claude Dauphin) who secretly lusts after Marie, orders the two to fight it out for her hand, hoping to eliminate his love rival. When his boyhood friend is subsequently framed for the murder, Georges, not realising Felix's involvement, does the decent thing and turns himself in to the police. The tragedy is complete when Georges discovers Felix's role in his downfall, escapes from custody, and kills Felix.

Detailed Information

The Paris demimonde of 1900 is the setting for director Jacques Becker's (Touchez Pas Au Grisbi, Le Trou) influential Casque D'Or.

Georges Manda (Serge Reggiani, Le Doulos), an honest woodworker, falls in love with Marie (Simone Signoret, Les Diaboliques), the moll of minor crook Roland (William Sabatier). Gangster boss Felix Leca (Claude Dauphin) orders Georges and Roland to fight a duel to the death over the girl. Felix then pins the blame for Roland's death on Georges' boyhood chum, Raymond (Raymond Bussieres), knowing that the woodworker will nobly accept the blame; this will leave Marie alone, which is what the lustful Felix has wanted all along. When Georges learns he's been set up as a dupe, he plots his revenge.

Based on the true-life Leca-Manda scandal, Casque D'Or brilliantly mixes violence with tenderness to capture the brutality of the French underworld and the tragedy of doomed love.
