Detailed Information

Two decades after the unforgettable Broadway debut that launched her meteoric career - the Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy winner returns to the Lyceum Theatre in New York City for her first solo special in over 13 years. This contains her highly anticipated return to the comedy stage, along with that first performance twenty years ago that set her on the way (‘Whoopi: Direct From Broadway’)

The star of Ghost and Sister Act reprises some of her most beloved characters in this sensational new performance, including the rant-prone dope fiend "Fontaine" — now taking aim at the Bush administration after a dizzying trip to Amsterdam — and the unnamed "handicapped woman" who first found romance on the Lyceum stage in 1985. Always striving to keep the show offbeat Goldberg also introduces "Lurleen" to the mix, an older Southern belle facing menopause with an unlikely fascination for all things feminine.

Working once again with Angels In America director Mike Nicholls (who first brought her to the stage), Goldberg uses these characters to voice her personal opinions on certain issues, with comedy that is sharp and off-beat, yet candid and passionate. Whoopi is at her witty best, integrating her revered and hilarious content with new contemporary material to brilliant effect.

Anyone who has laughed at a Whoopi Goldberg film or is a fan of stand-up comedy will love this performance, and for those people Back To Broadway is an essential release to add to their DVD comedy collection.
