Novelist Charles Wills (Van Johnson) travels to Paris to obtain custody of his young daughter. His story is then told in flashback, relating how he arrived in Paris after the Second World War and fell in love with the wealthy Helen Ellswirth (Elizabeth Taylor). The two settled down together, but Wills' lack of early success as a writer and subsequent heavy drinking placed an impossible strain upon the relationship.
