As The Amazing Spider-Man hits cinemas with a reboot of the Webbed Wonder's adventures on the silver screen, so too is it time for his videogame exploits to get an overhaul. Developer Beenox has helmed the games series for a while now, with the last two outings – Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time – having done their bit to make fans happy. Now, however, the developer has turned its attention to the film universe with a game that follows up on the events of the film, serving as an epilogue.
To this end, the developer has gone back to Spidey's videogame roots. Where recent games focused on tight, linear experiences, The Amazing Spider-Man returns us to a New York that's an open world for the gamer to explore.
In the game, Alester Smythe (who comics readers know as the Spider-Slayer) has taken over the running of Oscorp and has decided to shut down all cross-breed programmes. Things go wrong, however, and they bust loose. It's this – along with a whole bunch of robots – that Spidey has to deal with.
Combat takes a similar route to that in the Batman: Arkham games, with timing and counter-attacking taking prominence over lengthy, button-mashing combos. The biggest addition to the game is 'web rush', which shunts the player into a first-person viewpoint and slows things down so they can pick out their targets as they shoot out webs.
Can you fill Spidey's skinny little spider-boots? Remember, with great power comes great responsibility...
