“Where do I stand for a corner kick?”
A nostalgic trip just in time for the World Cup!
Forget the basic plot, hammy acting and a predictable ending, because this is one of those films that gives you a nice warm glow inside and will guarantee to cheer up any rainy day!
During World War II, POW’s plot an escape from their camp against the backdrop of game of football against the evil prison guards. “So what! - seen it all before”, I hear you cry? Well it also stars some of the biggest names in football – and this is what sets it apart!
The legendary Pele was the star attraction, but he was ably assisted by the great Bobby Moore, John Wark and Ossie Ardiles (who spoke no English at the time). Add in the star qualities of Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone and you have a unique blend that just about works!
The actual game plays out as expected with the nasty Nazis bullying their way to a convincing lead. Eventually the Allied underdogs eventually win over the crowd and achieve parity with a fantastic Pele overhead kick – and yes, Pele only needed one take from a Bobby Moore cross!
It’s both the naivety and the sheer simplicity of the plot that leaves you happy – and all this against a backdrop of war. The characters are made in the real ‘Roy of the Rovers’ mould and when the actually footballers have to deliver lines they do it with aplomb.
They really don’t make them like this anymore so enjoy this gem in all its re-released glory – it certainly beats most of Vinnie Jones' career so far! Add to your list now!
