At a Glance

Despite the recent formation of a National League, each of Brazil’s states hold their own championship, the largest and most prestigious of which is Rio’s Carioca Championship. The capital’s two most successful teams, Vasco and Flamengo have the largest fanbase in Rio de Janeiro and therefore millions (milhoes) of fans follow this match with special interest and such games have become known as ‘classico dos milhoes’. Vasco da Gama was founded by Portuguese immigrants, and it’s still the team traditionally supported by the Portuguese and ethnic community of Rio as when Vasco da Gama first entered the Rio de Janeiro Championship in 1923 they were the only club in Rio that allowed black members. More than anything it was this decision that created the rivalry between Vasco and the upper-class rich people’s club Flamengo. The Carioca Championship Greatest Game reveals the history, star players, managers and goals of the past 85 years and the fans who make it so much more than just another game.
