A college professor, on vacation, overhears a conversation by her next-door neighbour. She discovers he is a psychiatrist, and whilst listening in on one of his sessions she is forced to face her own life honestly and in consequence turn it around.

The successful and happily married Marion - beautifully played by Gena Rowlands - is satisfied with her life until a chance encounter with another woman leaves her questioning the lack of passion and true fulfilment, and eventually forces her to look at her marriage and finds it severely lacking in emotion and love.
