Unless you have been living under a rock for the past forty years, I would guess that you have heard of Global Warming. This subject has been in the headlines for the past few decades and is taught to all children as part of their science curriculum. Despite the world’s awareness of the existence of Global Warming however, very little has been done in order to prevent this from occurring. As a result, tens of thousands of people have died over recent years worldwide, (including 35,000 in Europe); all due to climate change caused by Global Warming.

“That what we take for granted may not be here for our children”

Ever since his son was critically injured after being hit by a car, US politician and former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore has taken a close interest in the threat posed by Global Warming. While in office, Gore backed a variety of environmental initiatives, not least being part of the administration that signed the Kyoto Treaty… this was to no avail however, as the US Congress rejected the treaty and the Bush Administration has even suggested since, that Global Warming does not actually exist and has refused to send this back to be ratified.

For years now, Al Gore has travelled the globe, giving speeches, meeting political and business leaders and telling everyone he can about Global Warming, presenting the facts to those who will listen. He explains that the lack of action by the US Government is due to the fact that this threat is ‘an inconvenient truth’ that politicians refuse to accept due to their own vested interests.

Acknowledging the lack of political will, Al Gore has changed tactics by taking his message directly to the people. In this film, Gore presents us with more than four decades of scientific fact which first of all proves the existence of Global Warming and shows us that many of the disasters that we have experienced over recent years are a direct result of the climate change caused by Global Warming. It is his hope that in going direct to the people; this will start a grass roots campaign to save to prevent the catastrophe that is due to take place within the next fifty years and save the planet for all of our children and grandchildren.

Keeping things simple (but not in a condescending way), An Inconvenient Truth presents Al Gore’s original presentation and adds in additional pieces, computer generated imagery, personal stories and animation in order to tell a very compelling, powerful story. Gore keeps things entertaining, making a few jokes as he goes but also avoids politicising or turning the documentary into a guilt trip. What is clear from this film is that if we do not act soon, we will be unable to prevent the destruction of our way of life as we know it and we will all be affected.
