Encounters In The Natural World
A definitive collection of works by acclaimed German filmmaker Werner Herzog. Herzog returns to the non-fiction world with ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD and this time, he travels to Antarctica in order to deliver a funny, visually arresting, dreamlike glimpse into Earth's most mysterious continent.
In GRIZZLY MAN, Herzog has crafted an honest and moving portrait of wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell, whose obsession with grizzly bears ultimately led to his demise. Herzog's inclusion of footage shot by Treadwell gives a unique insight into the state of mind of this complex, intriguing character who found solace in the wild.
Herzog turns his eye to the beautiful but forbidding wilds of the Amazon in THE WHITE DIAMOND, a fascinating documentary about a research mission that went horribly wrong when the aircraft carrying a scientist and his filmmaker friend crashed en route to its destination. Ten years later, the scientist who survived the crash returns to the Amazon canopy where he recalls the tragic accident that claimed his friend's life.
LA SOUFRIERE tells the remarkable story of a handful of Guadeloupeans who resisted evacuation when a large volcano threatened to destroy their island. Herzog and his camera crew travel to the site of the near-catastrophe (amazingly, La Soufriere never did erupt) to interview those islanders who chose to stay behind and face certain death.
Also includes THE FLYING DOCTORS OF EAST AFRICA, a straight-forward documentary short which follows a group of medics who tend to the more primitive parts of East Africa.
