Wishes

Blockbuster is proud to have raised funds which have helped Starlight to provide the following wishes:
Dominic's wish:
When Dominic was four years old, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. It was the start of three and a half long years of treatment. Suzanne, his mum, explained, "He was so ill he was off his feet for most of that time and in a wheelchair. At times he was so thin and frail it was utterly frightening."

For a long time now Dominic has been army mad, and Starlight made sure that Dominic, his brother, Alex, and his mum and dad all had a wonderful day experiencing his wish 'to be a soldier'

"Within a few minutes of arriving at the barracks, the boys disappeared before reappearing dressed head to toe in proper army kit! They even had their berets on. It was a brilliant start to an incredible day riding in tanks (the boys even drove one) and army trucks. They also helped mechanics to fix a broken tank... well, Alex tried to push this enormous broken tank - we were all laughing so much! One of their favourite bits was eating in the main canteen with all the soldiers. Felt so special to be part of the team."

She added, "Without doubt Starlight made all of his dreams come to life."
Tom's wish:
Tom is 15 years old and has leukaemia. He plays the guitar in two bands and wished for a Dingwall guitar. When Starlight supporter, Mark Knopfler, the lead singer and guitarist with Dire Straits, had heard about Tom's wish, he generously donated the exact guitar of Tom's dreams.

Tom's mum, Moira, said, "Tom is renowned for his smiles but I will never forget the one that lit up his face when he had the Dingwall in his hands."

"It means a lot to him that it was given to him with Mark Knopfler's help and he has been playing it non stop. It has been very hard for him to miss out on so much this last year and playing his guitar is really helping him to get through the trauma of chemotherapy."
George's wish:
Chemotherapy and other treatments for cancer can leave little patients with very little energy. George was diagnosed with a brain tumour, aged only eight, and was forced to spend many days away from school. One of his only pleasures was watching wildlife documentaries on TV, during which he became fascinated by pandas.

Every time he went to hospital he would spot the panda 'teddy bear' in the flower shop at the entrance and his mum would treat him to it for his stay.

It is perhaps not surprising that George's Starlight wish was 'to meet a real panda'. His mum said, "When he told us what his wish was, we were not at all sure that Starlight would be able grant it. When we heard Starlight could... well, I can't tell you how excited we all were."

Starlight wishes create such anticipation and excitement for very poorly children, as his mum explains: "George made his wish towards the end of his two years of treatment and chemotherapy. The chemo was gradually wearing him down and his wish gave him such a boost. It helped him to keep going through those last few months of treatment."

She continued, "It turned out to be a fantastic trip for all and a wonderful chance to go away as a family. Starlight sent us to San Diego zoo. The best bit for George was definitely the pandas. We were on an amazing behind the scenes tour of the zoo and we were able to see the pandas that weren't on display to the public. When we went into the pandas' enclosure, George's response is hard to describe. He was completely overwhelmed by the experience. He stood apart from us and literally a couple of metres away from the panda. His eyes welled up and he was very quiet. He just stood there reflecting and taking it all in. It was an incredibly poignant moment for the whole family."
Daniel's wish:
A year and a half ago, in the week before his seventh birthday, Daniel was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Since then the strength of the Power Rangers has inspired him to fight on bravely. Daniel had no idea that his wish 'to meet the Blue Power Ranger' was going to come true, even when he was mysteriously brought down to London for a shopping spree in his favourite store. At the start, Daniel was a little overwhelmed at the choice of toys, but who should whoosh in to his rescue...the Blue Power Ranger! Together, they had great fun playing (and posing) and the Power Ranger helped Daniel pick out lots and lots of goodies to take home.
