If you could have one wish, what would it be? For seriously ill children
this is a fun but hard choice! The wishes granted by Starlight are very
varied and have included wishes: for a laptop, for an
electric guitar, to go on a family holiday to Tenerife, to swim with
dolphins, to meet the players at Liverpool FC, to be a pop star for the
day - even to go to a worldwide wrestling match!
Starlight also granted
the wish of four year old Chloe, who suffers from heart disease. Her wish
was to have tea with the princesses at Disneyland. Starlight organised
for a special meeting with her favourite princess called Belle. Chloe's
mum said,
Whatever the wish, Blockbuster is delighted to help Starlight to grant it.
Thank you for your support.
Starlight Entertainment
For ill children, fun and laughter can be the best medicine
possible. Starlight's Entertainment Programme provides just
this, helping to distract seriously ill children in hospitals
and hospices throughout the UK. Each year, over 500,000
hospitalised children are entertained with Starlight Fun Centres,
Starlight's laughter-filled parties and pantomimes, Starlight
Distraction Boxes and many families benefit from a Starlight Outing.
Starlight Fun Centres
Starlight Fun Centres are mobile entertainment units on which
children can watch films and play games.
Thanks the support of Blockbuster's customers, Starlight has
nearly achieved its aim of putting one Starlight Fun Centre in
every hospital and hospice in the UK.
Feedback from parents of hospitalised children and hospital
staff highlights the effectiveness of the Starlight Fun Centre.
As one mum said: "The hospital's Starlight Fun Centre is wheeled
from bed to bed in the children's ward. It is constantly in use
and certainly the most effective post operative relief available,
bringing more smiles and drying more eyes than any medicine on offer".
Starlight Distraction Box
Starlight Distraction Boxes take the magic of Starlight to sick
children in their homes as well as in hospitals and hospices. Each
fun-coloured box contains 40 games, toys and puzzles, which help make
unpleasant treatments less traumatic. As explained by a Theatre Sister
at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, it reduces the child's fear: "The
children get so distracted that they are only reminded of the purpose
of their visit when the anaesthetist interrupts their fun."
With the support of Blockbuster and its customers, Starlight hopes to
distribute 5,000 Starlight Distraction Boxes this year. Blockbuster
have pledged to distribute these Starlight Distraction Boxes across the
UK saving Starlight thousands of pounds.
