David Wiseman is an eleven year old boy who is mad about cricket. He lives in South London the son of a Polish Jew. His expertise in recanting statistical information on cricket stars live and dead is not unfortunately matched on the playing field where his skills with the ball leave a lot to be desired. His claim to fame at school is acting as the scorer for the First Team, so when a West Indian family move in next door he becomes very interested when he spies a cricket net in the back garden. David's father is not happy when he finds out that David has been visiting the new neighbours. But Dennis, the new neighbour, coaches his own daughter in the game of cricket and happily considers David part of the squad. David finds Dennis' approach fun and is soon so improved he makes it into the First Team at school.
