Set in the vast wilderness of northern California during the late 19th century, TRACK OF THE CAT centres on the Bridges family, who live out in the middle of nowhere. When a mountain cat attacks and kills one of the boys, older brother Curt (Robert Mitchum) vows to seek out the beast and avenge his brother's death. Director William Wellman (THE OX-BOW INCIDENT) pits man against nature in this deliberately paced psychological Western, and infuses the film with a sense of foreboding as the family begins to fall apart.
