Mary Ann Singleton, a young secretary from Cleveland, takes a vacation to San Francisco and is so taken with the place and the people, she decides to stay. Set in 1976, the city is at the height of its gay, drug and disco cultures… for innocent Mary Ann, this is overwhelming.

A controversial series due to its drug and nudity content, there was a backlash against Tales in the City by the conservative right in America following its original broadcast which caused the follow up series More Tales In The City to be scrapped by the American Network. Series 2 was eventually picked up by Channel 4.
