Supernatural – Season 2

An outstanding addition to an outstanding series, Season 2 of Supernatural is much darker and deeper in tone than last year, however it manages to keep the same mix of action, drama, horror and comedy that has made it so popular to so many.
For those of you unfamiliar with Supernatural, let me give you a quick recap of what it’s all about. There are these two brothers – Sam and Dean who travel through the States battling ghosts, demons and supernatural entities that would have most people running in the opposite direction. They do this because their house was invaded by an evil spirit when they were children and this spirit killed their mother. After this death, their dad went a bit loopy and trained them in the art of demon hunting…. (Think
Ghostbusters crossed with
Angel).
While Dean took to his father’s ‘demon hunting’ discipline, Sam on the other hand wanted nothing to do with it all, preferring to have an ordinary life with his perfect girlfriend. It is only when his girlfriend is murdered by the same demon that killed his mother, that he joins the family crusade. It’s all very revenge motivated.
Season 1 was mainly about finding their father, the man who had trained them to fight the darkness. The brothers travelled around the States, investigating every ghost and strange happening in the hope of finding their dad. Season 1 eventually led to a final confrontation with the demon that killed both Sam’s girlfriend and their mother; they found their old man but things didn’t go too well. As a result, Season 2 continues the story, but things are much darker tone.
Sam blames himself for what has happened, and this makes it very much a dark and sombre affair. Even as he starts to get over it, things naturally take a turn for the worse when he finally gets another girlfriend but then discovers that she’s in fact a werewolf and he’s forced to kill her. He really should wear a warning – it’s not fair on the women in his life.
Anyway, all this dark sombreness adds much to the drama and prevents the show from becoming too predictable. There are some really stand out episodes – with each subsequent episode getting better and better.
The final three discs of Season 2 ramp up the suspense extremely well and lead to a MAJOR cliffhanger for the show that not only resolves most of the questions that we’ve been fed over the last two years but also spins the series off in a whole new direction. It’s likely to take fans completely like surprise (I was blown away); and it’s a terrific twist that sets the show up very well for Season 3.
