Coinciding with the 60th Anniversary of VJ Day, the Allied Victory over Japan in World War 2, THE SUN focuses on the Japanese Emperor Hirohito and is set in Japan in the summer of 1945. On the 15th of August, Emperor Hirohito made a public appeal and commanded his army and his people to cease all fighting. Millions of Japanese were shocked to hear their Emperor’s voice for the first time in their lives.

With this appeal, the Emperor saved the lives of millions of Japanese who were prepared to fight to the death for their Emperor and their country; it also saved the lives of thousands Americans and Chinese, British and Russians. In spite of this act, the victorious powers insist that the Emperor appear before a military tribunal.

Commander-in-chief of the American occupying forces in Japan, General Douglas McArthur, advises his own President not to declare Emperor Hirohito a war criminal. This film tells the story of the meetings between these two men.
