"An elegant suicide is the ultimate work of art."
It’s not often you get a collection of talent at this calibre working on one film.
Ryan Gosling
has already proven himself to be a powerful presence on screen and this is brought to light in this complex new character that guides us through some of the more emotional aspects.
Ewan McGregor
also offers a much needed sense of reality and
Naomi Watts
just sparkles (as she always does) while holding the pieces together of one of the essential key characters.
From the outset the film has a noticeably unique undertone. Subtle sequences transform seamlessly into much more complex ones. It all begins on a bridge where we meet our main character, Henry (Ryan Gosling) who has been involved in an accident that he believes is his fault. Following this he looks to his psychiatrist, Sam (Ewan McGregor) for solace, and ultimately explains that he has decided to commit suicide at midnight in three days.
Sam tries everything he possibly can to help Henry but the further he pushes the harder it seems to get. More and more questions arise the film goes on? Who was he driving with? Who had he hit in the car? Where are his family? The more Sam searches the further he seems to get from the truth. The film unfolds itself slowly not giving you any hint of what might be happening. Leaving you to put the clues together yourself.
It's one of those mystery movies that make you want to sit there with a notepad and blueprint everything down so you can feel the rewards of working things out for yourself. The ending will surprise you, there’s no doubt about that. And when watched for the second time you will see exactly where the pieces fit. As exhausted as you will be after watching this movie it is a truly great experience. In my opinion only these particular actors could pull it off. The dialogue is dark and clever just as it should be and visually it plays the same way. This is an interesting two hours of pure magnified glass entertainment. Do not miss out.
