| Smallville: Season 6
By Ross Forbes, Blockbuster.co.uk
The average viewer could easily be forgiven for thinking that Smallville wasn’t amazing viewing the first few seasons. It took a while for the writers to focus on what makes a modern day TV season so compelling, and that is focusing on the larger story arc and not just the one off episode story. The first few seasons suffered from the same scenario each episode, someone picking up a small portion of kryptonite, (The town seemed to be littered with the stuff) having it affect them in some nasty way and then Clark has to try and stop them.
The Superman story line has several landmarks in it, and each time one of them is reached, the season takes another giant leap forward. By season six, Clark Kent (Tom Welling) has found out about his origins, built his fortress of solitude, met his father Jor El (Terrence Stamp) who ironically played General Zod in the original Christopher Reeve films and of course the had to endure the sad death of Jonathan Kent; the man who along with Martha Kent raised Clark as their own son.
Whilst the season follows and expands on the childhood of Superman, an area that is usually glossed over fairly quickly in other versions, the season also introduces the formative years of what would later become some of DC comics best loved characters. Before season 6 we were introduced to a young Barry Allen, who would go on to become The Flash and Arthur Curry who will later go by the name of Aquaman. Together, with other characters they would form The Justice League. Another younger member of The Justice League who is introduced in this season is Oliver Queen, a sharp shot with a bow, an ecological activist who would later in life go by the name of Green Arrow.
With these milestones in place, Clark Kent makes leaps and bounds (But still no flying) towards being Superman. Season 6 hits the ground running and doesn’t stop. It begins with him being trapped in the Phantom Zone and General Zod possessing the body of Lex Luthor and the world possibly on the brink of destruction, and then motors on through the growing rift between Larna Lang and Clark as she grows closer to Lex as they prepare for their wedding. And a certain Jimmy Olsen making his first appearance.
With Season 7 already airing on television in America, you don’t have time to waste. You are going to have to watch season 6 faster than a speeding train so you will be ready for season 7.
