Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow
Set in 1939 New York, a reporter notices that the world's most famous scientists are disappearing. Determined to solve their mysterious disappearances, she seeks the help of her ex-boyfriend, the captain of a mercenary legion of pilots. Just as they are investigating the case, a league of giant robots attacks the town. Do the scientists' disappearances have anything to do with the attack? And can the reporter and the Sky Captain save the world?

When mysterious giant robots begin attacking the streets of New York City, intrepid reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) is on the story and enlists the aid of ace aviator and old flame Joseph "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Jude Law). Their mission is to find out who's behind these killing machines and stop a plot to destroy the world before it's too late.

Co-starring Angelina Jolie as the ravishing Captain Franky Cook and Giovanni Ribisi as the technical genius Dex, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow features innovative state-of-the-art special effects that will thrill and amaze you right through to the action-packed finale.

The Battle for Tomorrow is About to Begin...

A rip-roaring sci-fi adventure with an A-list cast and the most incredible, audacious and frankly gorgeous visuals ever seen in a film, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a true one-off, a genuine movie-making marvel. Set in an idealised New York towards the end of the Thirties, Sky Captain is almost completely computer generated, allowing writer/director Kerry Conran the freedom to create a shimmering yet moody art deco universe inspired by the pulp fantasy magazines and cliff-hanger serials of the 1930s and 1940s.

Those of you who have been less than impressed with sci fi of late, bemoaning bland virtual sets and uninspired actors who might as well have phoned in their performances, rest assured that there’s nothing mundane or disappointing about Sky Captain. Here’s a film with a spark in its eye, fire in its belly, beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. A true original, worthy of repeated viewings and ecstatic reviews.

Conran keeps the story simple, the perfect antidote to the needlessly convoluted and twisty plots we so frequently have to endure. The world is in the grip of terror, threatened by giant flying robots and the like, their origin and purpose a mystery. Determined to get to the bottom of things, plucky reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) joins forces with flying ace Sky Captain (Jude Law) in a dangerous quest that whisks them around the globe, underground and over ground, for adventures aerial, aquatic and madly robotic.

Ably supported by gadget-master Dex (Giovanni Ribisi) and the gorgeous, gutsy Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie), the courageous captain of an all-girl amphibious squadron, our heroes slowly close in on the culprit, mad scientist Dr Totenkopf, an evil genius with a monstrous dream. Unlikely as it sounds; Totenkopf is played by Laurence Olivier, an actor so talented and celebrated that not even death can stop him. Resurrected, not by magic but by computers (which for some people amounts to the same thing), Olivier’s presence is just one of a multitude of inventive, stylish touches that combine to make Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow a film that you cannot afford to miss.

The origins of Sky Captain are almost as fascinating as the movie itself. Based on a six minute short which Conran made single-handedly on an Apple computer, the film so impressed everyone who saw it that it proved to be a first class recruitment video for the A-list cast and tireless crew. "I didn’t sit down to make a six-minute film," reveals the director. "I sat down to make a feature film and I got six minutes into it, and it was four years later, and I thought I might need some help, because this was obviously going to take a while." Producer Jon Avnet was the first to be impressed. "Kerry has such a special vision, a sense of scale, of graphic composition, of the use of light and the use of darkness that is somewhat overwhelming. The result is that you take a ride. The suspension of disbelief is uncanny." Star and co-producer Jude Law was similarly bowled over. "What I watched was the most exciting and inspiring retrospective piece of cinema I’d ever seen." Before I even read the script," adds Paltrow, "I said, ‘OK, I’ll do it. I’ll be in it. Because what I had seen was just amazing." Be assured that the end result, the full feature, is every bit as miraculous as the short that spawned it.

To see this movie is to believe that anything is possible. In one sequence, Sky Captain flies through the streets of New York gunning for robots twenty times his size. In another, an epic aerial battle fills the screen with gunfire and exploding zeppelins. Besides the visuals, Sky Captain has a cracking sense of humour and a cast which click together so perfectly, their chemistry together is palpable. Ultimately, the movie instils you with a sense of wonder that makes you feel like a kid again.

Thrilling, surprising, funny and beautiful, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is ready to amaze you.
