Mysterious crop circles are appearing
around the world and in a Pennsylvanian corn field belonging to farmer, Graham
Hess and his family.
And so the nail-chewing begins as Hess (Gibson), his brother (Phoenix) and his
two children discover that there's more to this crop circle than meets the eye.
The TV tells them that an alien invasion is on the way. But are they already at
the family farm?
M Night Shyamalan cranks up the suspense in a film that grows more chilling
with every passing minute. The plot twists and turns creating the feeling that
anything could happen at any time. Dramatic, sometimes funny, and always scary,
Signs keeps you watching even when you want to shut your eyes.
After teaming up with Bruce Willis for his first two box office stunners, the
Director whom many call the new Steven Spielberg, has enlisted the heavyweight
acting talents of Mel Gibson for his latest family-friendly frightfest, the
crop circle thriller, Signs.
The movie focuses on the Hess family, consisting of father Graham (Gibson), his
two children and his brother, Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), after they wake up to
strange corn circles on their farm. Soon we begin to learn that these circles
have an ominous message for humanity and are the prelude to an alien invasion.
It's gripping stuff and if you like your movies scary as well as
thought-provoking, then you should love Signs.
"Night takes these B-movie ideas," says producer Frank Marshall, "and kind of
turns them upside down by crossing genres. I wouldn't necessarily call Signs a
sci-fi movie. It's about so many other themes and layers."
"I was impressed by his brilliance to actually cook up the idea, write it so
eloquently and craft it so wonderfully in a script, then to execute it with
absolute certainty," says Mel Gibson. Joaquin Phoenix agrees: "You can talk to
him about when your character was ten and he'll tell you some story about them.
He makes research so much easier."
Of course, anyone familiar with Shyamalan's first two films will know to expect
a twist in the tale (though we're not giving that one away here). Suffice to
say, you won't be leaving Signs feeling cheated. "What I want is an ending that
will pummel the audience," he says. "To me the feeling is I've been sparring
with you with my left hand the whole time, but at the end you realise I'm not
left-handed and I pound you in the last round with all these things you didn't
know."
So, feeling ready? Then now is the time to venture into the spine-chilling
world of Signs...
