Near the end of the 18th Century, a young girl's murder is avenged by the fiery death of Lord St. Clair. One hundred years later his descendant, John Stockton returns to the fateful village. His strange behaviour and the death of a baby alerts Sherlock Holmes to this harbinger of death.
