“Here’s a gay little group…mind if I open my veins and join you?”
Phil Silvers is at his best in this classic comedy show from yesteryear. Silvers plays Sgt. Earnest Bilko, the ultimate conman. An unscrupulous Sergeant responsible for the motor pool at Fort Baxter. Bilko does everything he can to get rich quick and to get up in the world.
Declared the top TV sitcom on British TV of all time by the Radio Times back in 2003, It is very easy to see why… Phil Silvers is a genius - a comedy performer who obviously loves playing the lovable rogue. Silvers is supported by a top cast of regulars, most notably Maurice Gosfield as the naive Private Doberman and Paul Ford as Bilko’s flustered Colonel John Hall.
The show featured comedian Silvers as motor pool master sergeant who would gamble constantly on anything and could count money by running it through his fingers. Always looking for the next get rich quick scheme and ways to avoid the more unpleasant aspects of the US Army; through the course of each episode, Bilko will start with a scheme and through the course of the episode, he will have to lie, cheat and corrupt innocent soldiers in order to stop his scheme from being discovered. These rarely worked however Bilko usually managed to come out smelling of roses.
A fantastic show, Bilko is obviously the inspiration for more recent comedies such as Father Ted and is as good today as it was back in 1955. Add to your list now and experience the genius that is Phil Silvers.
