| The crew of Serenity takes on any job that will pay, even if it's not exactly legal. Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), the captain, was on the losing side of a galactic war, and now all he has is his ship, named Serenity, and his loyal crew: his second in command and most trusted ally, Zoe (Gina Torres), her husband, the pilot, Wash (Alan Tudyk), the mechanic, Kaylee (Jewel Staite), and the muscle, Jayne (Adam Baldwin). When Malcolm takes on two new passengers, a young doctor, Simon Tam ('Sean Maher' ) and his unstable, telepathic sister River (Summer Glau) he gets much more than he bargained for. The two are fugitives from The Alliance, the conglomerate that controls the galaxy. River learned something no one was ever supposed to know... and The Alliance will do anything to make sure no one will. Morena Baccarin, Ron Glass, and Chiwetel Ejiofor also star.

Serenity
"No more runnin'. I aim to misbehave."
There's something special about Serenity, the miracle movie adaptation of Joss Whedon's prematurely
cancelled TV classic Firefly. "This film should not exist,"
explains the writer and first-time feature director. "Failed TV shows don't get made into major motion
pictures - unless the creator, the cast and the fans believe beyond reason." And believe they did,
turning the TV DVD into a major bestseller, building fansites on the web and even raising funds,
finally convincing movie bosses to take a chance on what turned out to be a classic science fiction film.
An ingenious fusion of the values and settings of the western genre with the traditional trimmings of
sci fi, Serenity follows the fortunes of a group of smugglers, mercenaries and fugitives as they
struggle to survive a totalitarian regime, the monsters it created and the numerous additional dangers
related to their lawless lifestyle.
Set in a futuristic, post-Earth universe dominated by a planetary Alliance, the series and subsequent
feature chronicles the adventures of plucky little spaceship Serenity and her eclectic crew of outcasts,
led by Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds ( Nathan Fillion). Adding
an extra layer to the action is the cultural aside that as only the US and Chinese cultures have survived
into the future, the worlds we encounter are hybrids of the two: Though everyone speaks English, they
always swear in Chinese.
Relentlessly pursued by a scarily gifted Alliance operative ( Chiwetel Ejiofor),
a man determined to capture traumatized telepath River (Summer Glau)
for fear of what she might know of their dark history, not to mention the fact that she might well be the
deadliest weapon in the universe, the crew of Serenity learn to fight for what's right as opposed to what's
profitable. And through it all there are the Reavers, psychopathic cannibals cutting a bloody swathe through
the galaxy...
"This story was not done being told," says Whedon, best known previously for creating Buffy the
Vampire Slayer and successful spin-off Angel. "It wasn't out of me yet... and it wasn't out of these
actors. I wanted to tell a story about people who were living in space, but not living in grandeur.
We've used up the Earth, so we've moved on to a new solar system. Where once we had new countries to
explore, now we have planets. There's
no alien life of any kind that we have discovered. It's still just us.
"It's a vision of the world more or less as it is today," notes Whedon. "The idea of the show was that
in the future, nothing has changed. We've got more technology. We've got more people. But we've got the
exact same problems: personally, politically and ethically."
Complex, surprising, thrilling and breathtaking, Serenity is the complete package. Skillfully
characterised and played with real aplomb by a perfect cast, this spellbinding adventure is smartly
scripted with style and wit, inventively plotted full of twists and unexpected turns, shot with
tremendous scope and laced with awesome effects. "And when it comes to the bells and whistles,"
concludes Whedon, "yes, we have them all: a hovercraft, action, gunfights, fistfights, cannibals -
everything you could want in a movie." The man speaks the truth. Serenity rocks!
