Jack Black stars as Dewey Finn, a hell-raising guitarist with illusions
of grandeur who worships rock 'n' roll and is determined to lead his rock
group to victory in the Battle of the Bands - then one day his dreams are
shattered when he is kicked out of the band.
Desperate for work, Finn manages to impersonate his flatmate and becomes
a substitute teacher at a prestigious school run by neurotic Principal
Rosalie Mullins (Joan Cusack). After hearing a group of fifth grade
under-achievers practicing in an orchestra class, Finn decides to give
them a little music lesson of his own.
We will teach the world how to rock 'n' roll!
School of Rock was written by Jack Black's neighbour - Mike White, author of The
Good Girl and is perhaps too close to home for the two friends.
The idea for the movie came when writer White (The Good Girl, Dawson's Creek),
saw Black running naked through the halls of their apartment block and heard
his music blasting out at full volume. Add to that White's admiration of Black
and a star was born!
White said: "Jack is a great performer, a terrific musician and the perfect anti-hero.
He's kind of unhinged in that fun way that Willy Wonka is, and I kept having this idea
about his Jamming around with a bunch of kids."

From High Fidelity to Shallow Hal, Jack Black has filled the big
void left by John Belushi and John Candy for a larger than life comedy actor.
And in a rare moment, he gives it to us straight...
|
Blockbuster: Why did you decide to play Dewey?
Jack Black: "I just love the way Mike writes. Not only does he have the
funny edge that suits me, but also he knows how to get into my voice."

BB: What was it like working with director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused)?
JB: "Rick brings reality, honesty and believability to the film. He reins me in,
which is important because I always go 10 miles too far over the top, so when I go a
little too crazy, he brings me back to reality."
|
BB: You appeared with Joan Cusack in High Fidelity. Was it good to work with her again?
JB: "It was great watching her character crack, Joan is awesome. She usually plays
these sort of blithe spirits, so it's funny to see her as the uptight buttoned down principal.
It's also great to watch her and Jack go at it."
|
BB: Was it easy working with child actors?
JB: "These kids were amazing musicians from the start and they took direction really well.
Jim O'Rouke (Who plays with Sonic Youth) rehearsed with the kids until their chops were really up
and their rock licks were nice and shimmy-shannied."
