“Live or die… make your choice”

Not since the Scream series have I been so excited about the third instalment of a Horror movie. It’s very rare that you get a trilogy of films that manages to hold its intrigue and keep people wanting more right up until the third act. Already pegged to go down as one of the most successful horror franchises ever, Saw has allowed us to delve into one of the most clever and sadistic minds on the big screen, and chapter three only continues this disturbing feast.

All in all it’s been a fairly quick release; Saw 2 was released only a year before this film (The first Saw being released only a year before that!) so the fan base didn’t really have too long to wait. Add to that the fact that clever psychotic criminals have been at the top of everyone’s cool list since ‘Se7en’ and you’ve got yourself a pretty guaranteed success.

This time the games focus on Lynn (Bahar Soomekh) and Jeff ( Angus MacFadyen). Lynn is a doctor who is having an affair and neglecting her family. Jigsaw kidnaps her and hooks up her to a device that is connected to his heart rate. She is tasked with keeping him alive. If he dies, she dies. Jeff is still mourning the death of his son, killed a few years ago by a drunk driver. Jigsaw presents him with a series of challenges. Each one contains somebody somehow connected with his son's death. Jeff can choose to seek revenge on these people, or save them.

“Hello, America. Do you wanna play a game?”

I have NEVER ever looked away from the screen before in a horror movie. Even the gratuitous scenes in Hannibal or the psychotic and gross shots in Hostel were not enough to turn my head but this film has done it. This film has actually stripped me of that crown so in respect I take off my hat to it. It's a brilliant movie because it really holds back on nothing. The blanket of safety that we are used to in film seems to have been pulled off and torn apart.

My guess is they feel they have to push a little further with every film, if you watched Saw II and thought that it crossed the line with the blood and torture then merely the opening scene in this new film will be enough for you to want to rip out the TV socket. Only the strongest stomachs will survive this one... its for the horror conesours. Fans of the series are already heralding this instalment as the best (probably why part four is already in the works) but add it to your list and decide for yourself.
