| RV: Runaway Vacation
By Mal Simons, Blockbuster.co.uk
“Whenever a big white man picks up a banjo, my cheeks tighten.”
Legendary funny man
Robin Williams is back in this family comedy about a businessman who takes his family on an RV trip across country in order to secretly make a business meeting and save his job. With some fantastic lines, great co-stars (
Jeff Daniels!) and a brand of comedy that only Williams can provide, this is great stuff!
Robin Williams stars as Bob Monroe, a family man with a beautiful wife Jamie (
Cheryl Hines) and two teenage children – Cassie (Joanna Levesque) and Carl (
Josh Hutcherson). When he is ordered by his boss to cancel his family vacation in Hawaii to make a business meeting; Needless to say Bob doesn’t relish the thought of telling his family that their holiday is cancelled so he comes up with a plan to do both.
Bob decides to hire a recreational vehicle (RV), a giant caravan with all the mod cons such as televisions, oven, couches and so forth to spend quality time on holiday with his family, while, at the same time, travelling to his meeting. His family are not too keen on swapping the luxury hotel and beach in Hawaii for sleeping rough in campsites across the country but Bob insists and they get on their way.
“Welcome aboard, everybody. Before we embark, I think we should give this beauty a name. Suggestions?” – Bob
“The Turd.” - Cassie
“The Big Rolling Turd?” – Carl
“In that spirit, we set forth.” - Bob
At one of the campsites, the Monroe’s meet the Gronickes (Jeff Daniels and Kristin Chenoweth), a brady bunch type family who have a very strange, positive and sickly sweet view on life. The Monroe’s are quite disturbed by how ‘friendly’ this weird family is towards them and try to escape… the Gronickes end up chasing them across the country.
“What do they like about us? We're not even that appealing.”
As Bob’s meeting looms ever closer, Bob has to deal with family squabbles, including his mouthy teenagers; fellow RV drivers, mobile phone problems and more. All the time hiding the truth of their trip from his family.
Like most Robin Williams films, this is a guilty pleasure – one which comes highly recommended to rent. Add to your list now!
