Title Information
Revolver
By Paul Greenwood, Blockbuster.co.uk
“The greatest con, that he ever pulled... was making you believe... that he is you.”
Don’t believe the hype!
Guy Richie’s return to the gangster themes we all know and love has certainly thrown the critics a huge curveball – Lock Stock part 3 it aint! Think Fight Club with a twist of David Lynch and you begin to understand the surreal world of Revolver.
It starts off pretty linear – Jake (played by Richie stalwart
Jason Statham
) is a gambler so good he is banned from most Casinos. Invited in to a private game run by gangland kin pin Dorothy Macha (played by a tangoed
Ray Liotta
), he takes him to the cleaners rather than lose the game – the hit is ordered and this is where it starts to get murky.
Jake then crosses paths with Avi and Jack – who make Jake an offer he cant refuse – protection from Macha in return for working for them. The plot takes so many turns that you really do need to keep a clear head to try and fathom out what the hell is going on as chess, bags of money, Mr Gold (think Keysor Soze) and tonnes of gangsters are intricately woven together.
The film is ultimately about manipulation – not only of the lead character – but of the viewer, as nothing is what it first seems. A film that will continue to divide the critics due to its complex nature –its very easy to dismiss as nonsense, but over time this is destined to be a classic. Full of subtexts and challenging subliminal references, it will certainly spark debate amongst watchers.
