| Return to House on Haunted Hill
By Ross Forbes, Blockbuster.co.uk
After the successful remake of House on Haunted Hill it was inevitable that at some point they were going to make a sequel. With such a fascinating location and original story how could they not open the doors to the Dr. Richard Benjamin Vannacutt asylum again?
Ariel Wolfe is the sister of one of the two survivors of the Stephen Price massacre that happened in the house a few years before. The sister became obsessed with the killings and the house and has now become a shut in. A college professor has a theory behind the massacre, a lost idol that attracts evil.
He believes that the idol was purchased by Vannacutt to become part of his collection. If this is true, then it would not only explain the Price killings, but also the original murders that forced the asylum to close. The idol is also worth a small fortune to the person who finds it, but first they must not fall under its spell.
Ariel and the professor are forced to return to the house by a renegade archaeologist, who along with his team of killers will stop at nothing to get their hands on the idol for themselves. It is not long before they are all trapped in the asylum together and the horrific killings start again. The House on Haunted Hill is far from empty; the souls of the dead want revenge.
A classy sequel that utilises the original sets, whilst also creating new horrifying areas of the asylum to crawl through. The ghosts flit by the corner of your eye before appearing in full horror before you, making you leap from your chair. If the first film raised the stakes for inventive deaths, then this one raises the bar. Come on in, Dr Vannacutt will see you now.
