Louise is only eighteen-years-old and is stuck in a run-down girls' school in the heart of the English countryside. Her one consolation during the cold nights is Matthew, the American art teacher, who is the second husband of the headmistress, Veronica Van Huet. With half-term looming Louise cannot bear the thought of a whole week away so arranges with the Head to stay on at school to do extra study. She and Matthew grab the first opportunity to be together but their enthusiasm gives the game away and this is when the trouble really starts.
