Alex and Brian are the parents of a new-born baby girl, Emily, but shortly after the birth Brian is faced with the possibility of losing both Alex and Emily. Miraculously they both survive but into their lives comes Caire who has to look after both the parents and the child. She becomes a close friend to all three so when Alex is diagnosed as being terminally ill Claire comforts Brian in a way that makes Alex plan to keep the family together after she has gone.
