“I've seen every possible ending. None of them are good for you.”
What kind of possibilities swirl around your head when you think of taking a glimpse into the future? Of course I see Shannyn Sossamon and myself on some sort of small engagement in Barbados – not sure how I’m gonna work that out but it WILL happen. Would it even be a good thing though? There’s the point to consider. I mean if you saw that in a few days you were going to have a car crash would it make you drive safely… or would you simply be a nervous wreck who causes even more accidents.
Nicolas Cage seems to like these high concept movie ideas, and why not! I couldn’t think of anything more fun than portraying a guy who can actually see two minutes into the future. I was pretty intrigued when sitting down to watch this, names like Minority Report started going through my mind and Cagey boy doesn’t usually disappoint.
The film starts out by introducing us to Cris Johnson (Nicolas Cage) a small time magician who uses the fact that he can see the future to trick people and make some cash. It’s limited though as he can only see his own future and only ever two minutes ahead.
The FBI notices Cris' rather unique abilities and Agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) wants to use him to find a stolen nuclear bomb before terrorists can deploy it. Cris avoids her, though, for two reasons. One, unless the bomb is going off nearby and in the next two minutes, he can't help. Two, once you let the government know you can see the future, they'll never leave you alone.
“It happened. It just hasn't happened yet.”
Determined to get out of town to avoid the FBI, Cris meets Liz (Jessica Biel), a beautiful woman who produces a strange anomaly with his psychic abilities. What actually happens is that when he uses his ability on her for some reason, he can see much further into the future than just two minutes.
This all culminates into a really action packed movie with a couple of twists and turns thrown in to keep things sharp. Nic proves to be an old pro at these types of films and shows us a character that is struggling with both the good sides and bad sides of this gift.
The final twist of the movie is a pretty good pay-off although you may have seen the formula a few times before. It’s a popcorn film really – kinda like bringing a loud blazing hot cinema reel home with you wrapped up in a DVD box. Good fun all round I think and for me the addition of Jessica Biel as the romantic interest for Cris meant that there was nothing I could complain about.
