Lost Room, The
The Lost Room
By Cory Peynado, Blockbuster.co.uk

“There's a price for everything”

Ever wish you could just escape? Disappear from sight and perhaps reappear somewhere else? I remember sneaking round to my girlfriend’s house late at night once (to play monopoly and the like) and having her dad come home early from work. “Well, we’ve had a good run, all good things…” these were just some of my candid last words to her as I stood in my rather handsome birthday suit, balancing on a gravel coated roof near her window ledge until I’d gotten some confirmation that daddy was well away from any visible windows… I’ll finish this later.

But that would have been a wonderfully nice time to reappear somewhere else I think, and I’m sure we’ve all had similar desires at certain points. The intriguing story of the new series - “The Lost Room” focuses on the hunt for a very special key. I say very special because when used (no matter what door its used in) this key offers entry to a small mysterious motel room and from there ladies and gents - you can go anywhere you want to.

I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll just give you a few important story details. Peter Krause is Joe Miller, the police detective who is given this portal key from the dying hand of a criminal that knows him. After trying it out in a few doors Joe and his daughter Anna learn that they can travel anywhere they want as long as they can visualise it.

Turns out it isn’t all fun and games though as Joe learns that a group of people called the Legion are desperately trying to obtain the key and they are willing to go to great lengths to get it from him. To make things worse (and this is the important bit) a violent confrontation with the Legion leads Joe’s daughter Anna to quickly flea into the lost room, trapping her in another dimension. It’s now down to Joe to enter this strange world and try to find his daughter.

More and more television shows are asking us to suspend our disbeliefs these days, what with Lost, Heroes and The 4400 all giving us characters that can do some really weird and wonderful things. Perhaps that’s where TV is headed. I mean Emmerdale Farm is great for a watch but when are you ever gonna see one of them cross over into a new dimension or even do something small like throw a fireball? I think we need a little relief from conformity sometimes and this show is exactly what is required.

Each episode seems to have a pretty gripping ending as well, which makes it really difficult to wait for the next one. I’d recommend it to Quantum Leap fans I think, simply because of the nature of the main character who is ultimately searching for something by means of this bizarre phenomenon.

I had to make quite a leap myself off of my girlfriend’s roof that cold December night, and luckily I made it around the side of the house and out to my car. Now if I had had access to the special lost room at the time I wouldn’t have had to flap my way through three separate stinging nettles in her garden that night and life would have been sweet, so don’t make the same mistake! The room is waiting.
