When his knight dies just one joust short of winning
a tournament, starving squire William (Ledger) secretly borrows the armour of
his ex-boss to claim the prize. He then plots with his colleagues to tour the
European jousting pageants as a fake knight, reaping the rewards en route. But
forged scrolls and words can't prepare the young peasant for a world of
beautiful maidens demanding poetry, ruthless counts raised on combat and funny
dances in front of giggling noblemen.
About as historically inaccurate as it's possible to get, A Knight's Tale never
pretends to be a serious period style drama (you can see a rickety wooden
Millennium Wheel on the London skyline and the fantastic soundtrack includes a
great Robbie Williams and Queen partnership). Rather, it's a delightfully silly
medieval action comedy that's part buddy movie and even part date flick. And
great fun with it. Ledger exudes easy-going charm, and there's an earthy
chemistry between him and the rest of the cast. Aside from stacks of jokes,
there's splendidly rousing action sequences to enjoy too - mostly involving
hard armour and some incredible jousting sequences.
Mix this all up and A Knight's Tale proves a thoroughly enjoyable historical
romp. Highly entertaining.
