Kate & Leopold is a romantic comedy about how, when you're least expecting
it, you can find love in the most surprising of places.
Leopold, played by Hugh Jackman, is a tall, dark and handsome English Duke
living in New York in the 1800s. Kate, played by Meg Ryan, is an attractive
market research executive living in the same buzzing city but in the present
day. The pair are destined to have an old-fashioned, modern day romance.
In the 19th century, Leopold is a man obsessed with the future who believes the
stiff, stuffy traditions of his privileged family are out of date. He is being
encouraged to use his status as an eligible bachelor to rescue his family from
bankruptcy - they want Leopold to marry for money not love. The handsome young
duke looks for a way to escape, dreaming that he will meet the girl that
destiny, rather than his family, has chosen for him.
In the 21st century, Kate is a determined, modern career woman. Following a
break up with her eccentric boyfriend, Stuart (Liev Schreiber), she has become
hopelessly cynical about love.
They may be separated by over a hundred years but Kate and Leopold are made for
each other.
When the dashing Leopold falls through a portal in time, he ends up staying in
the apartment beneath Kate's and it's only a matter of time before the couple
meet. When two worlds collide, the unlikely romance that follows is funny and
touching. Directed by James Mangold (Girl Interrupted, Copland) and with a
powerful supporting cast including Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Breckin
Meyer (Road Trip), Kate & Leopold is a humorous, moving film that makes for
a great night in.
