| John Tucker Must Die
By John Sheridan, Blockbuster.co.uk
“I'd hit him with my car if he wouldn't make body casts a fashion statement.”
When three teenage girls discover that they are all dating the same guy - Captain of the basketball team John Tucker, they decide to work together to get back at him. Unfortunately they find that John Tucker is a hard man to knock down. Desperate Housewives star Jesse Metcalfe and Nip/Tuck’s Sophia Bush star in this amusing teen comedy from director Betty Thomas (28 Days / Doctor Dolittle / The Brady Bunch Movie).
John Tucker (Jesse Metacalfe) is the most popular guy in school – all the girls want to date him, all the guys want to be him. He is good looking charming, rich and generally friendly; he appears to be (to use an English phrase), a perfect gentleman. John Tucker hides a bit of a secret from his female admirers however – he’s a bit of a player and he is dating at least three girls at the same time. He gets away with this by exploiting the ‘High School mentality’ and picking girls from different cliques that would never normally speak to one another. When the three beautiful girls he is currently dating share a gym class; his secret is revealed and after initially fighting amongst themselves, the girls agree to join forces to ruin John Tucker’s Life.
The trio soon discover that running John Tucker’s ‘perfect’ life may not be as easy as they initially thought. Whether it be dosing him with oestrogen so he falls into tears, or tricking him into appearing as the STD posterboy – he always manages to turn it around to his advantage. The girls therefore decide on another strategy – they are going to break John Tucker’s heart.
In order to do this, the trio get Carrie, the new girl in town and the only one who is capable of getting them to work with one another to step up to the plate and do the unthinkable. They are going to break John Tucker’s heart.
Director Betty Thomas who came to fame starring in Hill Street Blues, has carved out a career of creating masterful romantic comedies and John Tucker is no exception. While teen ‘revenge’ comedies have been done before and John Tucker Must Die could never be called a masterpiece of the genre! It never gets boring either; Thomas has managed to keep the film fresh, humorous, charming and well worth your attention.
