Hostel Part 2
By Cory Peynado, Blockbuster.co.uk

Currently harbouring one of the most gore tolerant stomachs in the business, Tarantino’s buddy Eli Roth serves up another feast for Halloween in the form of Hostel Part 2. Sickos out there will be happy to know that the gruesome Slovakian hostel is still open for business, but this time there will be no holding back.

"As my father always says, "nozdrovja", to your health!"

As fast as this new internet technology is moving and commerce continues to thrive I still think you’d be hard pressed to find a friendly outlet that offers you a bunch of tools and lets you torture people at your convenience. It appears this would be a little too unsavoury for most consumers and luckily, a little FREAKIN inhumane to most of the decent human beings on this planet.

Never fear though because in movie land these ventures are a dime a dozen, and it looks like some more American college students studying abroad have walked into to this murky side of the earth and stumbled upon this same Slovakian hostel. Now I’ve heard the current debate about “Torture Porn” or “Gorno” in movies and how the whole genre might just be a passing fad but I disagree.

I think it can be good ‘Horror’ entertainment as long as it’s done properly. I’m of course not advocating any of it and I cant stand movies that contain pointless and unjustified gore for gore sake but when there’s a good story and believable characters I think its a great way to frighten the bejezzus out of yourself.

If you haven’t seen the first movie then don’t worry, this new instalment doesn’t carry much over. This time instead of the three backpacking guys, it’s a trio of young and lush looking women. Beth (Lauren German), Whitney (Bijou Phillips), and Lorna (Heather Matarazzo) who are all off for a weekend getaway while studying in Rome. On their journey, they are approached by a woman who tells them about an amazing place in Slovakia that they should visit (dot dot dot).

First things first – its not too nice a place this little Slovakian haven, and the guests don’t often leave with glowing reviews. Hence, our travelling beauties are quickly placed in some horrific situations pushing the gruesome level even further than in the first film. There are a couple of twists and turns in this one but in the end it all boils down to whether the girls can escape this torturous place with their lives.

Some might find this a little too similar to the first film as the story follows a lot of the same narrative roots. What does stand out though is the cold, dark and helpless atmosphere of each and every location. The movie does so well at putting you right in the middle of these brutal and unrelenting places that it’s hard not to feel the fear. So you all have been warned. This isn’t a flower filled picnic in the park; this is closer to a blood bath in your basement.
