Hoodwinked!
By Mal Simons, Blockbuster.co.uk

“So! Mr. Wolf... May I call you Wolf?” - Flippers
“You can call me Sheila. I like long walks and fresh flowers.”- Wolf
“Quit playing around! You're looking at 3 to 5 in an old shoe with no windows, SO START SINGIN'!” – Grizzly

A fairytale turned on its head; Hoodwinked is this year’s Shrek. When Police Chief Grizzly (a bear), investigates a disturbance at the home of an old Granny, he finds the old lady, a hungry wolf, a mad woodsman and little red riding hood. He suspects them of being responsible for a series of ‘goody’ robberies and with the help of Flippers The Frog, he investigates. But the two of them discover that nothing is what it seems.

The story is told in flashback from three different perspectives, that of Little Red Riding Hood (Anne Hathaway), the wolf (Patrick Warburton), the Woodsman (James Belushi) and Granny (Glenn Close)… in effect, this film is three stories in one. Each perspective is funny in itself and intersects at various points. It is only at the end of the three stories, do we uncover what has actually happened and who the ‘goody robber’, the creature that has been stealing recipes from the ‘goody’ sellers of the forest is… and for a family film, this is very satisfying.

Through the course of the movie, we discover that Little Red Riding Hood is not an innocent, helpless little girl, the hungry wolf may not be as meat obsessed as previously reported, the mad woodsman may not be the hard man he first appears to be and the helpless old granny… isn’t so helpless. All along the way, referencing popular culture, giving enough for children and adults alike and doing all the things that made the Shrek movies so cool.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this first effort from director Cory Edwards but this is a great film; the animation and soundtrack is second to none – having a style all of its own, the dialogue’s witty and the plot twists and turns so we’re kept guessing right up to the very satisfying ending.

This has now become the most successful animated movie at the UK cinema after Shrek, quite an accomplishment but one that this definitely deserves. Great entertainment with plenty for all the family, add this to your list now!
