HOME was David Storey's second play to be produced at the Royal Court Theatre in London's Sloane Square - the first being The Contractor, which transferred to the West End in July 1970.

HOME opened at the Royal Court on June 17th 1970, transferring to the Apollo Theatre some weeks later and opening at the Morosco Theatre, New York five months later. This television production was recorded in London in 1971 with the original cast and director. It was shown on BBC TV on December 23rd 1972 and repeated on 15th July 1975.

The director of HOME, Lindsay Anderson, had previously collaborated with writer David Storey on the 1963 film version of Storey's novel This Sporting Life, with Richard Harris and Rachel Roberts.

HOME is especially memorable for the performances of John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson. The critic Keith Dewhurst wrote at the time: "When we watch Gielgud and Richardson, there is something fabulous and extra-theatrical about it, something sad and majestic and frail, like the Indian summer of great athletes." Fortunately these performances were captured on this video, and are now available to see again for the first time in almost 30 years.
