Director Allen Coulter gives us an interesting glimpse at the life of actor George Reeves, the extraordinarily talented man who wants to have Clark Gable's career but detours into the wasteland of 1950s television to star in "Adventures of Superman."
When his body is found in the Benedict Canyon home he shared with his fiancée (Robin Tunney) on June 16, 1959, the police call it suicide, but several people have their own reasons for not being sure. Ben Affleck plays the man himself and does an exceptionally good job of it. I mean he gets a lot of stick in the movie world but he is actually one of the best things about this true to life thriller.
Some of the films stronger points are completely visual, every scene has managed to capture the period perfectly giving us a real sense of the life and times in those kind of high pressured glamorous environments. The crux of the film focuses on what actually happened to George Reeves and whether or not it was suicide and this is what keeps the intrigue flowing through to the end.
It’s a stimulating watch, and for fans of the superman franchise it’s actually quite informative. The performances are strong from everyone, Adrian Brody puts in a particularly invoking show as the detective on the case and takes us through some of the trials and tribulations that come with trying to solve one of Hollywood's most infamous mysteries.
