Heroes - Season 1 - Part 6
Heroes
By Cory Peynado, Blockbuster.co.uk

”Sometimes I look in the mirror and I'm not sure it's me looking back.”

Needing absolutely no introduction, the full series of NBC’s Heroes is now available to rent, and for most of us it’s not a moment too soon. The award-winning series has garnered more hype than any of its peers this year. It’s one of those amazing shows that everyone’s addicted to and no one can stop talking about.

I couldn’t have been more than seven years old but I really believed I could fly once, eventually the bruises and grazes and stitches put me off though. In relation, the coolness of a show like this comes from presenting the audience with a chance to ask the question; what would you do if you found out you had a special power and how exactly would you handle it? Would you be on Parkinson the following week shouting about it? Or would you keep it to yourself.

It seems Tim Kring, the Heroes creator and show runner, kinda hit the jackpot with this kind of thinking, putting normal individuals living an ordinary life into this extra-ordinary situation. Flight, invisibility, telekinesis and extra sensory perceptions are the sort of things that these characters are trying to cope with and despite initially seeming like a bit of fun we get to see how hard it might get to try and keep things under control.

”You start talking about capes and tights and I'm out of here.”

Along the way, they all come to understand that their abilities not only set them apart, but give them a responsibility to help others. With these powers, some want to become better people, but as with most power, there are also those that succumb to the darker side of their new attributes. With heavy comic-book overtones, the show is of course fantasy oriented, but it’s the human struggle, and the battle between good and evil that makes it a compelling drama. For me this is what television is all about. Save the cheerleader, save the world? Or save the cheerleader and ask her out for a drink? Either way I never lose. Highly recommended.
