The great Roman General Maximus (Russell Crowe) has once again led the legions to victory on the battlefield. The war won, Maximus dreams of home, wanting only to return to his wife and son; however, the dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) has

one more duty for the general - to assume the mantle of his power.

Jealous of Maximus' favor with the emperor, the heir to the throne, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), orders his execution and that of his family. Barely escaping death, Maximus is forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator by Oliver Reed.

Reed not only teaches Maximus to fight but also the art of showmanship, where the real power lies as you become more and more popular. Maximus is so successful  in the arena that his fame grows and he is taken to Rome to fight. Intent on avenging the murder of his wife and son by killing the new emperor Commodus, Maximus knows that he has to woo the crowd to stand any chance of reaching his goal and sets about becoming the greatest gladiator and hero ever known to the empire.

Using state of the art special effects Rome is shown in all its glory, with thousand of extras, towering grand buildings and enough action to give any movie a run for its money -- Gladiator pushes your senses to the limit. When Crowe walks into the Coliseum for the first time he is awe of the 50,000 strong audience cheering for carnage and we too are left wide-eyed by the vast panorama that greets us.

This is epic, thrilling cinema, painted on the broadest of canvases and boasting a star studded cast. There's passion, energy and excitement making Gladiator quite simply - umissable!

Made for $103million, Gladiator took $182million in the US and 30million in the UK
