 | | “It’s clobberin’ time!”
Forty-four years after creating what many regard as the ultimate comic book, legendary writer Stan Lee and iconic artist Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four have finally made it to the screen in realistic form. An extended family of superheroes whose powers and exploits inspired Pixar’s mighty Incredibles, the fab four are the ultimate super-powered celebs, saving the world one madman at a time.
“It’s thrilling really,” says Stan Lee with obvious excitement. “Fox had wanted to make this movie for a long time. I’m glad they waited for the right story and the right technology. They certainly got the perfect cast and it’s all up there on the big silver screen… the humor, the drama, the adventure, the action, the fun - all the things that make them so fantastic.”
A space mission harvests unexpected results when a brutal cosmic storm bathes a science team in DNA-twisting radiation, leaving them and their collective destiny forever changed. Inventor, astronaut and ultimate square Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) leads the group as bendy, stretchy do-gooder Mr Fantastic. Future wife Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) transforms into The Invisible Woman, able to project powerful force fields and, as her name suggests, vanish into thin air. Sue’s hotheaded brother Johnny (Chris Evans), the joker in the pack, is reborn as flying flameball The Human Torch. And gruff, no-nonsense Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis), whose freakish transmutation is the most shocking, becomes the orange, rock-like and superhumanly strong creature, The Thing. Together they battle their former benefactor, Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon), whose evil ambitions threaten the entire world. But then, with a name like Doom, he was hardly destined for charity work.
“Fantastic Four is probably one of the comic books that is closest to my heart,” says director Tim Story, “because they are real people living and working as a family. No matter how dysfunctional they may appear, no matter how much bickering there is between them, they do stick together as their lives take a dramatic turn and they grow from relative obscurity to celebrity cult status.
“The biggest difference between the Fantastic Four and other comic book superheroes,” adds Story, “is that they don’t have secret identities or hidden alter egos. When they walk down the street in Manhattan, people recognize them as Reed Richards or Mr. Fantastic. Johnny Storm is the perfect example of an overnight sensation and he relishes his time in the spotlight as The Human Torch. They are daytime heroes, right out there in the open standing next to you and me and people these days want heroes like that. I think that kind of accessibility to their audience is one of the reasons the comic has been so popular for so many years.”
“Ultimately,” concludes Story, “the real fun of this story revolves around their powers. I mean, who hasn’t wondered what it would be like to be invisible or be able to fly or to have superhuman strength? I think the kid in all of us can relate to that. Watching them as they first discover their powers, then how they integrate them into their new lives and, ultimately, utilizing them in the battle of good versus evil is very cool. They say money is power but for the Fantastic Four, powers are power.”
Brisk and exciting with incredible production design and eye-popping special effects, The Fantastic Four is a thrilling introduction to a classic superhero team. Well played by the entire cast, whose various dramas and comic interludes give the movie a real family atmosphere, this movie has all the heart, imagination and spectacle you could ask of any DVD.
