Employee of the Month

“Oh yeah, that picture goes up on the wall she slides into the sack faster than a singed Koala bear looking for an all night burn center.”
The slacker comedy has seen somewhat of a resurgence over the past few years with better quality movies like Van Wilder and drug fest Harold and Kumar returning the genre to its Ferris Bueller roots. Employee of the Month is the latest in the chain of lowbrow comedies however is cleverer and funnier than other recent films of its type.
Zack (
Dane Cook) is a box boy working in Wal-Mart type superstore in a regular American town. Completely content with his life – having spent the past few years in the same position and showing no ambition to progress further; Zack spends his days with the other box boys and a half blind optician, sharing stories and working as little as possible.
When blonde bombshell Amy (
Jessica Simpson) starts at the supermarket, transferring from another branch, Zack gets a hold of her personnel file and discovers that she has a history of dating the Employee of the Month. Keen to get her into the sack, Zack decides to turn his attitude around and do all he can to shine and win the much coveted position of Employee of the Month. He starts to come to work on time, actively goes to help customers and (gasp!) works(!)
Unfortunately for Zack, if his new found commitment to work was not hard enough to bear, Zack has to compete with the overachieving and obnoxious Vince (
Dax Shepard), who has easily won Employee of the Month for a record breaking seventeen months on the trot. If Vince wins an eighteenth time, he will be given a car and fast tracked for upper management. He also knows of Amy’s ‘fondness’ for the Employee of the Month and wants in on the action. The two have been rivals for some time and they both try sabotaging each others’ efforts with hilarious results.
Written by the Greg Coolidge, the man behind the underrated
Sorority Boys; Employee of the Month was never going to win an Academy Award® for its plot; this is afterall, quite a simple movie about two guys who are trying to pull a gorgeous girl... It is still a great film however, and a movie with a heart. The comedy never gets too vulgar, our main heroes are likable, and Dax Shepard is brilliant as the over the top, villainous Vince, intent on beating Zack through any means necessary.
A welcome diversion from real work; recommended to rent. Add this to your list now!
