Dr Nathan Conrad (Michael Douglas) is
an eminent New York psychiatrist who has it all: a beautiful wife (Famke
Janssen), a loving 8 year old daughter, and a very successful career. On the
eve on Thanksgiving, Conrad is called by an old friend and colleague (Oliver
Platt) to see a young 18 year old patient, Elizabeth Burrows (Brittany Murphy).
Burrows has spent the last 10 years of her life institutionalised, with a
history of unexplained violence, and misdiagnoses. In a seemingly catatonic
state, Burrows is elusive and intriguing, only saying to Conrad: "You want
what they want, but I'll never tell - any of you".
The next morning, Conrad awakes to find his daughter missing and his world
turned upside down. He is quickly contacted by Patrick Koster (Sean Bean) a
convicted thief and murderer, recently released from 10 years imprisonment.
Koster is holding Conrad's daughter hostage so that Conrad will retrieve a
secret number hidden away in the mind of Elizabeth Burrows, by 5pm that day.
With the clock ticking, and their apartment under constant surveillance, Conrad
must break down Burrow's mental walls and learn the secret she holds. As Conrad
finds out the disturbing truth behind Burrow's condition, he is forced to take
unprecedented action.
