Tallulah Bankhead portrays fanatically religious Mrs. Trefoile, a psychotic woman who, with the help of her gardener (Donald Sutherland), imprisons her dead son's fiancee.

They do this so that the girl's soul needs to be properly cleansed in order to be reunited with her dead husband in heaven. Legendary British studio Hammer produced a script by Richard Matheson, based on the novel by Anne Blaisdell. Considered to be a camp classic in many circles, the film is also regarded as one of Hammer's best moments.
